Two kinds of property, two different jobs
Gravesend splits neatly. There is a large stock of Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing, much of it near the town centre and the riverside, built to a pattern most people would recognise: front room, back reception, scullery behind. Then there is the newer end, the estates around the edges and the substantial new-build development out at Ebbsfleet.
They are not the same installation. On a terrace, the front is overlooked by the street and the vulnerable side is the back, reached from a rear alley or through neighbouring gardens. Cable routes are limited, walls are solid, and there is usually nowhere to put a recorder that is not a cupboard. On a new build, the walls are thin, the loft is easy, and the constraint is that you often cannot get at a cavity without making good afterwards.
Terraced property, and where the risk actually is
The single most common design mistake we see on terraces anywhere in north Kent is a system that covers the front door properly and treats the back as an afterthought. It is the wrong way round. A front approach is public and overlooked. A rear approach from a shared alley is neither.
So on this housing stock a sensible system puts real coverage on the rear access and the ground floor rear, and treats the front as deterrence. It also means thinking about what a camera can see beyond your own boundary, because on a terrace the neighbouring gardens are close enough that this genuinely matters rather than being a formality.
Commuting, and why remote matters more here
Gravesend is a commuter town with fast links into London, and Ebbsfleet is faster still. The practical consequence is a lot of properties standing empty through the working day, with the occupier a long way off if something happens.
That shifts what a system needs to do. Recording after the event is the minimum. What actually helps is knowing at the time, which means alerts to a phone and the ability to look at a live camera and decide whether to ring somebody or ignore it. Getting that reliable, rather than generating so many false alerts that everyone stops looking, is mostly about sensor placement and camera detection zones.
Flats, blocks and door entry

Can you fit CCTV on a Victorian terrace?
Yes, and it is a good part of what we do around here. The constraints are solid walls, limited cable routes and often no obvious place for the recorder, all of which are workable once they are found at the survey rather than on the day. The design point that matters more is coverage: on a terrace the rear access is normally the vulnerable side and deserves the better camera.
Will a camera looking at my back garden cause a problem with neighbours?
It can, and on terraced housing it is the most common cause of friction. Once a camera covers anything beyond your boundary, data protection duties apply, and in practice the dispute is always with a neighbour rather than with a regulator.
