Start with how the property is actually got into
The useful way to design a home system is to walk round the outside and ask how somebody would get in without being seen. It is almost never the front door. On a terrace it is the rear, reached from an alley. On a semi it is the side gate and the gap between the houses. On a rural property it is whichever boundary nobody overlooks, and often an outbuilding rather than the house.
That is why a package priced over the phone is a guess. Two houses on the same street can have completely different weak points depending on what is next to them, and a system that protects the visible approaches and ignores the hidden one has spent your money in the wrong place.
What most homes actually need
Less than the brochure suggests, and in this rough order.
- An intruder alarm covering the real entry points, usually Grade 2 for a house
- Cameras where they add evidence or reach where a sensor cannot, such as a drive or an outbuilding
- Alerts to a phone that you will actually trust, rather than thirty a day
- Door entry or a video doorbell where seeing a caller matters
- Gate automation where the property has gates worth using
- A service visit once a year, which is what keeps any of it working
Wired or wireless
Wired is more stable, less prone to interference and needs less attention over the life of the system, so we fit it wherever a cable run is practical. Wireless goes in faster, causes far less disruption and is the sensible answer in a period property or anywhere you cannot chase walls or lift floors.
The systems we fit wirelessly are encrypted and supervised as standard, meaning the panel knows if a sensor stops reporting rather than quietly ignoring it. Where somebody quotes wireless because it is quicker for them rather than better for the building, that is worth asking about.
The claim we will not make
We install audible alarm systems with alerts to your phone. We do not run an alarm receiving centre and we do not advertise police response, because that needs an installer holding the relevant industry accreditation and we would rather be straight about it than imply otherwise.

How much does a home security system cost?
It depends on the size of the property, how many entry points need covering and whether it is wired or wireless. A two bedroom flat with a panel and a few sensors is a very different job to a five bedroom house with outbuildings and a gate. We survey before quoting rather than pricing over the phone, because the honest answer changes once we have walked round. The estimate is free.
What grade of alarm does a house need?
Grade 2 is the normal domestic specification and what most home insurers expect. Grade 3 applies where the risk or value is higher, or where an insurer names it, in which case that is your answer. If nobody has named a grade we will tell you what your property genuinely needs, including when that is less than you were expecting.
Do I need cameras as well as an alarm?
Not always, and we will say so. An alarm tells you something is happening; cameras tell you what. Cameras earn their place where they reach somewhere a sensor cannot, such as a driveway, a garden or an outbuilding, or where you want to be able to check an activation before calling anyone out. On a small flat they often add little.
Will I get alerts on my phone?
Yes, and the useful part is making them trustworthy. A system that notifies you thirty times a day is one you stop reading, and then it notifies you about the one that mattered. Getting that right is sensor placement and camera detection zones rather than equipment, and it is what we spend survey time on.
Do you offer monitored alarms with police response?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. Police response requires an alarm receiving centre and an installer with the relevant industry accreditation.
