Four towns, not one

Medway gets talked about as a single place and it is really four with quite different building stock. Chatham and Gillingham are largely Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Rochester has a historic centre with a strong run of Georgian and Victorian property. Strood is generally more modern, and all four have newer estates spreading around their edges.

For security work that is a real distinction rather than local colour. Terraces mean solid walls, limited cable routes and a rear approach that is more vulnerable than the front. Period property in Rochester means thinking about what gets fixed to a visible elevation. The newer estates mean none of that applies and the job is quick.

Terraced housing, and the mistake to avoid

The most common design error on terraced property anywhere, and Medway has a great deal of it, is a system that protects the front properly and treats the back as secondary. It is the wrong way round. The front is public and overlooked. The rear, reached from an alley or through neighbouring gardens, is neither.

So a sensible system here puts the better camera and the real detection on the rear access and the ground floor rear, and treats the front as deterrence. It also means being careful about what a camera can see beyond your own boundary, because on a terrace the neighbouring gardens are close enough that this matters in practice rather than in theory.

Flats, blocks and communal entrances

There is a lot of flatted property across Medway, and communal door entry is a steady part of the work: entrance panels that take weather and heavy use, cabling that has to reach every flat, and systems that have to survive residents changing.

We also take on blocks where the original installer has gone and nobody holds the engineer code, so no fobs can be added or removed. That is common, usually recoverable, and much better sorted before it becomes urgent.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover all four Medway towns?

Yes, Chatham, Gillingham, Rochester and Strood, and the villages around them. It is about half an hour from our unit at Aylesford. Worth saying that the four are genuinely different to work in, so the quote for a Rochester period property and a Strood new build will not look alike even for the same brief.

Can you fit a system on a Victorian terrace?

Yes, and there is plenty of it in Chatham and Gillingham. Solid walls interfere with wireless signal, cable routes are limited and there is often nowhere obvious for the recorder, all of which is workable once found at the survey rather than on the day. The bigger point is coverage: the rear access usually deserves the better camera.

Will a camera on my terrace upset the neighbours?

It can, and on terraced housing it is the most common cause of friction. Once a camera covers anything past your boundary, data protection duties apply, and the dispute in practice is always with a neighbour rather than a regulator. We plan angles to cover your property and not theirs, and will tell you if a position you want is likely to cause trouble.

Do you work on period property in Rochester?

Yes. The constraint is what gets fixed to a visible elevation and how cable is routed, and on listed buildings consent is needed for work affecting the fabric. We will tell you where that line falls on your property rather than drilling and hoping. The answer is usually workable with more thought at the survey.

Do you handle door entry for blocks of flats?

Yes, new installations and existing blocks. The usual difficulty on a block somebody else installed is that nobody has the engineer code, so fobs cannot be added or removed. That is normally recoverable. Get in touch with whatever paperwork exists and we will tell you where you stand before quoting.
