Why Sevenoaks work looks different
Sevenoaks has an unusual amount of substantial detached property with real land around it, a good deal of it set well back from the road behind long private driveways, and a fair number of gated private estates. Add the surrounding villages and you have a lot of properties where the boundary is a long way from the front door.
That changes the brief completely. On a terraced house the security question is the doors and windows. On a property with a two hundred metre drive, an outbuilding and a paddock, the doors and windows are the last line rather than the first, and a system that only covers them is telling you about an intruder who is already at the house.
Perimeter and approach, not just the building
The systems that work on this kind of property start at the entrance and work inwards, which is a different design exercise to bolting sensors onto a house.
- Cameras at the gate and along the drive, so an arrival is seen before it reaches the house
- Gate automation with entry control, so the gate is a decision rather than an obstacle
- Video door entry at the gate, answered from the house or from a phone
- Coverage of outbuildings, garaging and stabling, which are often the actual target
- Alarm zoning that lets you set the outbuildings while the house is occupied
- Wireless links where a cable run across a drive is impractical
Gates, and getting them right
Electrically operated gates on a long private driveway are close to standard on this kind of property, and they are the part most often installed without the safety work that legally belongs with them. A powered gate is machinery under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, and BS EN 12453 sets out how it has to behave, including force limits of 400 newtons for crushing and 1400 for impact.
In practice that means photocells, safety edges and a proper risk assessment, not simply a motor and a remote. It matters more on a private drive than people assume, because these are the gates children and dogs are around unsupervised.
Discretion on period and higher-value property
A lot of Sevenoaks property is either period, architecturally deliberate, or both, and the owners are usually not looking for something that announces itself. Camera choice and siting do most of the work here: equipment that reads small and dark against a building rather than white plastic on a good elevation, cable runs kept off principal faces, and control equipment sited somewhere sensible rather than in the hall.
None of that compromises what the system does. It does mean more decisions at the survey, which is why we look at a property in person before quoting rather than pricing from a description.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Do you cover the villages around Sevenoaks?
Yes, and a good deal of the work in this area is in them rather than in the town. Rural properties change the design more than the distance does: longer cable runs, outbuildings that need covering, and often no useful street lighting, which decides what a camera has to be able to do after dark. Ring and tell us where you are and we will confirm before quoting.
Can you cover a long driveway and outbuildings?
Yes, and on this kind of property it is usually the more important half of the job. It normally means cameras at the entrance and along the approach, coverage of garaging and outbuildings separately from the house, and alarm zoning so the outbuildings can be set while the house is occupied. Where a cable run across a drive is impractical, a wireless link does it instead.
Will cameras be visible from the road or the house?
Only as much as you want. Deterrence argues for something visible at the entrance, and discretion argues for everything else being unobtrusive, so most properties end up with a mix. Siting and equipment choice do the work rather than compromise on capability. On a period or architecturally significant property we will plan the runs and positions with you before anything is fixed.
Do you install and service electric gates here?
Yes, both. Sevenoaks has more gated frontages than most places we work, and a fair number of the systems we are called to were installed without the safety devices the standards require. Where we find photocells disconnected or force limits never set, we will tell you plainly, because that is the part that actually matters on a gate near children and animals.
How far is Sevenoaks from you?
About half an hour from our unit in Aylesford, so it is comfortably within the area we cover and service properly. That second part matters more than people expect: a security system needs occasional attention, and the difference between an installer who will come back and one who will not shows up two years later rather than on installation day.
